Long Life System: Vancouver School Board AV System
One of our principals first commercial architecture design was for the
Vancouver School Board, British Columbia, in 1980. The AV system used CICS,
VSAM and COBOL on state of the art hardware. The system was in operation with
almost no modifications for 20 years until Y2K (when the hardware was found to
be non-compliant).
The design of the system was innovative as a Relational Database Model was
hand built using VSAM to provide a feature rich environment that fulfilled the
customer needs for generations. It is this style of innovative and forward
looking design that we take delight in. Note: in 1980, IBM had announced
but not shipped the first commercial relational database (System-R).
