Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) decrease is often seen in CFIDS .  "A common traditional treatment of CFIDS is antidepressants (tricyclics and serotonin enhancers)... many PWCs become very ill from such drugs and have to do without it."

Consequences

The following suggests why CFIDS patients may become sick from serotonin enhancers, and thus they should be avoided (unless ISAC panel shows no abnormal results).

• accelerates aggregation of platelets
• increases procoagulant activity
• promote contraction of vascular smooth muscle cells

Our opinion is that serotonin is low because of its consumption in the coagulation reaction -- adding more serotonin without stopping coagulation first, is like trying to put out a fire by dumping coal on it.

Drugs Prescribed to increase Serotonin

Often depression-like symptoms associated with CFIDS is treated as conventional depression, with the prescription of SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor) or with 5-Hydroxy Tryptophan (5-HTP) is also used to increase Serotonin.

Some CFIDS MD's advocate it (Lapp ) and other strongly oppose it (Cheney )<<Selection in Document>>
